Exhibition – Portugal

SolRem’s exhibition aimed to trace the evolution of the Portuguese far-right, from the times of the Portuguese dictatorship Estado Novo to the present day. In this sense, the exhibition addressed relevant themes, according to the two different time periods.

  1. During the dictatorship:
    1. Anti-fascist resistance
    2. Women’s Solidarity Networks in Portuguese’s dictatorship
    3. Corporatism in Portuguese dictatorship
  2. After the dictatorship:
  1. The reorganisation of the post-fascist right after the Carnation Revolution (1974-1980)
  2. From the MAN neo-Nazi experience to the National Assembly with Chega, passing through the PNR (1985-2024)
  3. The upsurge of the far right in Portugal (2019-2024)

With this, the exhibition explored the dynamics associated with the resistance to the dictatorship, as well as the evolution of the far-right after the democratic revolution. It also delved into the recent resurgence of the far-right in Portugal, with the political party Chega as the main protagonist.

The participants wandered around the exhibition, paying close attention to the text and the overall message of the whole exhibition. They expressed concern over the rise of the far-right that we are witnessing  all over Europe, as well as shock regarding the recent elections of the United States of America. The gathering led to a heartfelt discussion about the current state of world politics. In general, we expressed how scary it is to see a world in conflict, where peace seems to not be prevailing and forces of hatred seem to be gaining support from the people.
